Artist Spotlight: Jan Towsley

After earning her BFA in Weaving and Textile Design at Rochester Institute of Technology's School for American Craftsmen, Jan Towsley opened her studio at Anderson Alley in 1989. While selling a number of utilitarian items, such as scarves, rugs and blankets, she has experimented and created art pieces woven of copper and brass wire. She uses a damask technique, which enables her to put complex images in the fabric before manipulating by shaping and heating. She also combines many fibers and metal in her work. Some of Ms. Towsley's larger commissions are located at Strong Memorial Hospital and The Summit of Brighton, Rochester, NY. Her work is also exhibited at the Oxford Gallery and she is professionally affiliated with the Weavers' Guild of Rochester. Ms. Towsley has been a long-time provider of workshop experiences in R-Centers through YA Rochester's partnership with the City of Rochester, and teaches weaving and fiber arts to students and adults of all ages.
